COMPULSORY COURSES

PHIL 101 HISTORY AND BASIC QUESTIONS OF PHILOSOPHY I (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines pre-philosophical and philosophical thought in Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese and Greek civilizations until medieval time in interrogating basic and perennial questions of philosophy such as meaning of life, knowledge, existence, value etc.

PHIL 102 HISTORY AND BASIC QUESTIONS OF PHILOSOPHY II (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines history of philosophy from medieval time until modern one to contemporary philosophy.

 

PHIL 103 LOGIC I         (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

In this course, students are introduced with propositional and first order predicate logic and symbolic notation of it.

 

PHIL 104 LOGIC II        (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

In this course, students learn advanced logic of first-order predicate logic, theorems, rules of inference, truth-functional expansions of formulas and assessing the validity of deductive arguments.

 

PHIL 201 ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY I (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines pre-Socratic philosophy. The school of Miletus, Ephesus, Elea, Pythagoreanism, atomism, sophists etc. are the topics of this course. The selected ones from the fragments handed down to us are read.

 

PHIL 202 ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY II (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines both systematic philosophers of Greek philosophy such Plato, Aristotle and Hellenistic philosophers in consideration of their epistemology, metaphysics and ethics.

 

PHIL 203 MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course studies issues related to state, authority, liberty, government, justice etc… Students are introduced with major thinkers of politics from both Islamic and western traditions.

 

PHIL 204 METAPHYSICS (3+0) 5 ECTS

Metaphysics is one of the central branches of philosophy. It inquiries into the question of Being and related concepts of existence, thing, property, event, matter, mind, space, time, and causality. Selected texts from the works of major thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Ibn Sina, Heidegger are read.

 

PHIL 301 ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY I       (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course focuses on the first classical period, since beginning to XI.Century, (mütekaddimin) of Islamic philosophy. It considers metaphysical, epistemological and ethical problems.

 

PHIL 302 ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY II (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course focuses on the second classical period, since XI. Century to XIX. Century, (müteahhirin) of Islamic philosophy. Sudents read selected texts from the philosophers such as Ghazali, Razi, Jurjani (Curcani)etc. 

 

PHIL 303 INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN THOUGHT AND MEDIEVAL CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course focuses on the formative period of Western thought in consideration of Christian theology, its appropriation of Greek, Hellenistic and Islamic philosophy, and then it examines important theologians and philosophers, such as Origenes, Augustinus, Boethius, Erigena, Aquinas and others at the undergraduate level. 

 

PHIL 304 EARLY MODERN PHILOSOPHY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the philosophies of early modern philosophers such as Descartes, Locke, Spinoza, Leibniz, Hume, Berkeley. It considers mainly epistemological and metaphysical views of those philosophers.

 

PHIL 305 HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the problem and themes of philosophy of science in the context of history of science. Therefore, it is about both philosophy and history of science. The course covers scientific developments in Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greek, Islamic World and modern Europe. 

 

PHIL 306 CLASSICAL TURKISH PHILOSOPHY I 3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the quiddity of Turkish thought, its conceptual framework, the methods for studying it, its relation to Islamic thought as well as its process of development from Seljuqs, through the Ottaman Empire to the republic period at the undergraduate level. Sadraddin Qonevi, Davud al-Kaysari, Molla Fanari, Kafiyaji, Hocazadah are the philosophers examined in the course.

 

PHIL 401 CLASSICAL TURKISH PHILOSOPHY II 3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the second half of the Ottoman Turkish thought until 19. Century at the undergraduate level. Kemal Pashazadah, Tashkoprizadah, Qinalizadah, Galanbawi, Haji Khalifa, Yanyali Esad Efendi, Mehmed Shirvani are the thinkers as the topics of the course.

 

PHIL 402 CONTEMPORARY TURKISH THOUGHT      (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                       

This course examines Turkish thinkers from both late Ottoman and republican period of Turkey such as Said Halim Paşa, Babanzade, Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır, Şehbenderzade Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi Efendi, İzmirli İsmail Hakkı, Mehmet Akif, Cemil Meriç, Nurettin Topçu, Sezai Karakoç, İsmet Özel. Modernization, political movements and cultural changing are some of the topics of the course.

 

PHIL 403 LATER MODERN PHILOSOPHY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines philosophies of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche. Besides, the post-Hegelian developments such as Marxism, naturalism, psychologism and historicism are the subjects included.

 

PHIL 404 CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY      (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course focuses primarily on the philosophical methods of 20th century and 21st century movements, such as phenomenology, hermeneutics and deconstruction.

PHIL 411 EARLY TURKIC THOUGHT AND MYTOLOGY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines pre-Islamic and early Islamic Turkish Thought and mytology. Tengrism, Turkic myths, toere (töre), Turkish idea of state and society are main topics of examination. Early Turkic thinker of Islamic period such as Yusuf Has Hacib, Mahmud al-Kashgarî, Ahmed Yesevî are also included. 

 

PHIL 412 CHINESE THOUGHT (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Chinese thought or Chinese Philosophy is a general term to refer to various philosophical and religious schools such as Confucianism, Taoism, Legalism, Buddhism and Mohism. It is one of the oldest tradition of thought in history. This course is a historical introduction to illustrate the development of Chinese philosophical and religious schools.

 

PHIL 413 INDIAN PHILOSOPHY          (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                   

Indian philosophy refers to various philosophical and religious traditions which emerged in Indian subcontinent such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. This course introduces main Indian philosophical schools, and deals with some central questions, themes and characteristics of these traditions.

 

PHIL 414 PHILOSOPHY AND LITERATURE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                

Great literary works have a serious philosophical message and exploration of human life experience. This course explores philosophical core of literary art works from Turkish and World literatures and the relationship between philosophical theories and the developments in literature.

 

PHIL 415 THE SOPHISTS         (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

The sophist thinkers, whose age is regarded as the Greek Enlightenment, played a key role in the history of philosophy. This course aims to explore and to understand the theories of the leading sophist philosophers such as Protagoras, Georgias, Kritias, Hegesias. The problems related to knowledge, ethics and society come to forward in this course.

 

PHIL 416 PHILOSOPHY OF NATURE   (3+0) 3 ECTS 5           

Philosophy of nature is one of  the most important courses. It aims to determine the fundamental principles of nature, and examines meanings of nature, causality and chance, place, space, void, motion, matter,  etc. Topics will cover both classical and modern examples.

 

 

PHIL 417 PLATO (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Plato is arguably the greatest philosopher of all time. This course focuses on Plato’s philosophical theories of epistemology, metaphysics and ethics.

 

PHIL 418 HELLENISTIC PHILOSOPHY              (3+0) 3 ECTS 5           

This course introduces the main schools of Hellenistic philosophy such as Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Skepticism. The selected texts of philosophers from these schools are read.

 

PHIL 419 MUTAZILITE SCHOOL                      (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                   

This course introduces the school of Mu’tazila and examines philosophical and theological theories of its leadings figures.

 

PHIL 420 INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC THOUGHT                (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                   

This course outlines and draws a general picture of formative period of Islamic thought in its first two centuries, focusing primarily on theology, Sufism, and appropriation of Hellenistic culture.

 

 

PHIL 421 NEO-PLATONISM    (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Neo-Platonism is very important for the later philosophical developments such as Islamic and Christian philosophical traditions. So, Plotinus is one of most influential philosophers of all time. This course examines Neoplatonist philosophy and explores its influences on Islamic and Christian philosophical traditions.

 

PHIL 422 STOICS                     (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Stoicism is a Hellenistic philosophical school, founded in Athens by Zeno of Cyprus. This course is about Stoicism and its major representatives; it explores the leading figures’ philosophical ideas of ethics and politics.

 

PHIL 423 PHILOSOPHY OF KALAM                     (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course discusses the thoughts of Islamic theologians such as Vasıl bin Ata, al-Ash’ari, al-Maturidi, Ghazali, al-Razi and contemporary theological thinkers such as Fazlurrahman and Tarıq Ramazan. 

 

PHIL 424 HISTORY OF SCIENCE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course covers entire history of science from Mesopotamians, Egyptians through Greek and Islamic scientific tradition until modern times.

 

PHIL 425 MYTHOLOGY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course explores mythological thinking before the emergence of philosophy in proper and gives details about the world mythologies such as Mesopotamian and Greek and Turkic myths.

 

PHIL 426 ARISTOTLE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course studies Aristotle’s philosophy, particularly his epistemology, metaphysics and ethics, focusing on his major works.

 

PHIL 427 HERACLITUS AND PARMENIDES (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Heracleitos and Parmenides are two major philosophers and the sources of two opposite metaphysical positions. This course focuses on the fragments of those philosophers and the interpretations of them in a comparative manner.

 

PHIL 428 FARABI AND IBN SINA        (3+0) 3 ECTS 5           

This course examines the philosophies of two major peripatetic Islamic philosophers, Farabi and Ibn Sina in detail. Epistemology, metaphysics, prophecy, politics and ethics are main interest of the course

 

PHIL 429 HUMAN RIGHTS       (3+0) 3 ECTS 5          

This course covers all themes and issues related to human rights. Students are introduced with the moral principles that govern human behavior both historically and problematically.

 

PHIL 430 SUFI METAPHYSICS             (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Sufi metaphysics is one of the richest tradition of Islamic philosophy and very essential to the course of Turkish thought. Sufism has been always seen the truest way of reaching truth by gnostics. Ibn Arabi, Konevi and David al-Kaysarî took sufism to beyond just expression of mystical experience and gave it a philosophical formulation.  

 

PHIL 431 SCIENCE IN OTTOMAN TURKEY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                

This course illustrates the course of science in Ottoman Turkey since the beginning until the period of modernization.

 

PHIL 432 INTRODUCTION TO AL-GHAZALI’S THOUGHT      (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                                                       

Ghazali is a figure to belong to both theology and philosophy, although he is very controversial figure in present as well as in past. After him, the picture of philosophy and of theology changed permanently in the eastern part of the Islamic world. This course examines Ghazali’s criticism of falsafa and his texts about theology, sufism and various topics.

This course gives a perspective about the relationship between philosophy and theology, and explores how they interacted with each other.

This course explores the philosophical background of economic theories, in paying a special attention to political economy and ethics.

 

PHIL 435 PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMATICS    (3+0) 3 ECTS 5           

Mathematicians played a crucial role in our understanding of philosophy in last century. There are different theoretical formulations of foundation of mathematics. This course introduces the discussions about the assumptions and foundation of mathematics, which are related to epistemology and metaphysics.

 

PHIL 436 PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS        (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Psychoanalysis was founded by S. Freud and became very influential on the some philosophical schools. This course is an examination of main problems and concepts of a set of theories related to psychoanalysis.

 

PHIL 437 IBN ARABI (3+0) 3 ECTS 5  

Ibn Arabi is regarded as both sufi and philosopher in broad sense. This course examines his ideas of metaphysics and ethics from historical and present perspectives.

 

PHIL 438 PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY    (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course studies theoretical aspect of history and relationship between history and philosophy. It explores the role of concept of history in human understanding of phenomena.

 

PHIL 439 PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the ontic structure of love and theories of love in the history of philosophy.

 

PHIL 440 READINGS ON DESCARTES, SPINOZA AND LEIBNIZ (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

Thıs course focuses primarily these rationalist philosophers’ epistemological and metaphysical theories. Students read selected texts from these philosophers. 

 

PHIL 441 READINGS ON LOCKE, HUME AND BERKELEY (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course examines the British empiricists such as Locke, Hume and Berkeley at the undergraduate level. Students read selected texts from important books of these philosophers. 

 

 

PHIL 442 PHILOSOPHY OF NATURAL SCIENCES        (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                       

This course examines the philosophical issues of natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics. Relativity theory, quantum mechanics, theory of evolution, chirality in nature are main topics of discussion.

 

PHIL 443 EXISTENTIALISM     (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                                           

In this course, we discuss the central questions of existentialist philosophy, in reading selected text from Kierkegaard, Jaspers, Sartre, Marcel, and Dostoyevsky.

 

PHIL 444 HERMENEUTICS      (3+0) 3 ECTS 5                                   

Hermeneutics is an important philosophical school of 20th, although it has very long history and is interrelated to various disciplines. This course will focus primarily on the figures from German philosophical circles, such Schleiermacher, Husserl, Heidegger, Gadamer, and Ricoeur.

Philosophy of technology is a growing philosophical branch. Technology rapidly changed our life and world. These changes caused many ethical, political and even metaphysical problems. This course studies these issues caused by technology in our life.

 

PHIL 447 PHILOSOPHY OF MIND   (3+0) 3 ECTS 5   

This course is about nature and essential structure of consciousness. There are different approaches to this field of philosophy. This course considers not only the theories in analytic philosophy, but also philosophy of history, phenomenology.

 

PHIL 448 CONTEMPORARY ISLAMIC THOUGHT        (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

In this course, students are introduced with selected films from both Turkish and world cinemas, and one tires to explore them from philosophical point of view.

This course is an introduction to analytic philosophy for familiarizing the philosophy students. Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, Moore, Quine, and Kripke are main interest of course. 

 

PHIL 451 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course  examines central concepts and themes related to religions. It is interrelated to other philosophical disciplines such as metaphysics, ethics,  epistemology, logic etc. Subject matter of philosophy of religion is not just abstract theory; it is relevant to both social and personal practices.

This course focuses primarily on Ibn Khaldun’s philosophy, in particular, his methodology and social theory.

This course explores Andalusian culture and its philosophical tradition. Art, literature and philosophy are main topics of the course.

This course is an introduction to some important ethical theories from Ancient, Islamic and modern Western philosophies.

PHIL 456 THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course studies the theory, possibility, suitable objects of knowledge, and how to go about attaining knowledge. Method, justification, truth etc. are main subjects of discussion. Student read selected works of both ancient and modern philosophers.

PHIL 457 PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE (3+0) 3 ECTS 5

This course introduces problems and theories of meaning, and usage, origin and nature of language from Ancient, classical Islamic and Western traditions, especially from Analytic philosophy in which philosophy of language became a central topic.

PHIL 458 AESTHETICS AND PHILOSOPHY OF ART (3+0) 5 ECTS

The course discusses some basic concepts and central problems about the nature of art, beauty, art work, taste, status of aesthetic judgement, aesthetic value and its relationship to other values. Students read selected readings from Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Hartmann, Heidegger.

 

PHIL 459 PHILOSOPHY OF ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE (USUL AL-FIQH) (3+0) 5 ECTS

Philosophy of islamic jurisprudence is one of the most original branches of islamic thought. This course explores the philosophical principles and pluralistic perspective of islamic jurisprudence.
